Summer in most part of India is extreme. The construction workers who are exposed to extreme heat or outdoor hot work environment may be at risk of heat stress and other occupational illnesses, which may have impact on productivity & other injuries also. Since work has to continue even in such environment let’s ensure that our workers are safe and comfortable in their working conditions.

Heat stroke  is a life-threatening emergency where the body temperature rises quickly. Symptoms include:

  • Hot, dry skin, high body  temperature (can be as high as
    106 F)
  • Confusion, delirium,  dizziness or loss of consciousness 
  • Seizures or convulsions  Rapid pulse
The emergency care of heat stroke is to cool the body as quickly as possible. One of the best methods for cooling the body during a heat emergency is to wrap the patient in cool, wet sheets.

Heat exhaustion can preceded heat stroke and includes cramps plus the following:

  • Weakness or fatigue
  • Headache, nausea, and/or dizziness 
  • Fast weak pulse and fast shallow breathing 

Heat exhaustion is best treated by taking the patient to a cool place, applying cool compresses, elevating the feet, and giving the patient fluids.
